Meaning of Juneteeth Day

Juneteenth is an African American holiday centered around freedom/independence. Its history is traced back to 1865 when President Lincoln freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation. Due to poor national communication, the slaves in certain regions of the country did not get the word that they had been freed until June 19, 1865. As a result, it has become a symbolic day of reflection and cultural celebration in the African American Community.
