    Greetings Grubsters,

I read about your outfit in The Nation, in an article by LaDonna Redmond. I want to contact you because I want to start a food program at the middle school where I teach. At this new middle school we have a rooftop garden that is not being used. I would love to see this garden become a working, selfsustaining garden where students are planting and tending to vegetables they can then harvest.

Somewhee down the road I would love to see students at our school growing vegetables and then preparing them in our school kitchen so that our school community will eat healthful meals. Growing their own produce will not only help them understand better the connection between growing and eating; it will also give them more appreciation for the challenges that our farmers face every day, every year.

I’m writing you folks because I want to know more about what you do and I want you to give me ideas and guidance about how to move my school in the direction I’ve outlined above. Give me tips about how to open administrative eyes to the possibilities of students growing, harvesting, preparing their own healthful foods. Maybe if the cooking aspect of my vision is not viable (because of safety concerns), we could open a community market and sell the produce, or donate some of it to a food pantry.

Perhaps some of your staff could come to our school and make a presentation that would encourage and inspire our administration and students to “get their hands dirty”…. in the garden.

Thanks for your interest and support. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Yours in Food Activism,
    James Brooks
